About This Course

The Print Press Management course provides comprehensive training in the administrative, operational, and strategic leadership of modern printing enterprises. This program bridges the gap between technical printing knowledge and effective business management, preparing students to oversee production workflows, manage resources, and drive profitability in Kenya's dynamic printing and publishing sector. Effective management in the graphic arts involves understanding how to translate economic limitations into achieving desired results, while managing and training personnel to produce high-quality work efficiently . Graduates will be equipped to step into supervisory roles, manage print shops, or establish and grow their own printing businesses. Students receive thorough instruction in the foundational principles of modern print enterprise management. The curriculum begins by examining the Six Ms framework essential to printing operations — Man, Machine, Method, Material, Money, and Management — which collectively define an organization's competitive position and operational success . Students learn that while most businesses possess the first four elements, it is the Method (the way things are done) and the quality of Management that ultimately distinguishes industry leaders from the rest. The course covers the basic principles of organizational management, functions, and techniques required for effectively running a production and operations department . The program provides extensive practical training in production and operations management, equipping students to oversee the end-to-end printing workflow. The curriculum covers planning, organizing, and managing production schedules to maximize operational efficiency and ensure timely order completion . Students learn to develop and enforce rigorous quality assurance protocols in compliance with industry standards, supervise equipment maintenance to minimize downtime, and collaborate across departments to facilitate integrated workflow . The course addresses Lean Production principles, on-site management (5S), and green printing standards, ensuring students understand how to reduce waste and improve efficiency . This includes knowledge of print technology, emerging processes, and appropriate techniques and methodologies to develop continuous business improvement processes . Financial acumen and costing are central components of the training. Students develop skills in monitoring and controlling operational expenditures, preparing detailed reports, and contributing to financial planning and budgeting activities . The curriculum covers estimating and financial controls, marketing strategies, pricing models, and cash flow analysis — ensuring sufficient cash to cover expenses, overheads, salaries, supplies, and reasonable profit margins . Students learn to research and report on new and emerging technologies, processes, and principles in print industry production, enabling informed investment and modernization decisions . The program emphasizes the importance of standards and quality management, teaching students that establishing consistent quality benchmarks is vital to preventing errors and maintaining market credibility . Beyond operational and financial management, the program includes human resource and strategic management content essential for building successful careers in print leadership. Students learn to lead the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of qualified staff, supervise and mentor employees, and conduct performance appraisals to cultivate a skilled and motivated workforce . The curriculum covers effective interpersonal communication skills essential for engaging with a wide range of internal and external customers . Students explore the management of people or processes within a print organization, applying critical thinking to solve problems and make sound decisions . The course also addresses the business environment in Kenya, examining factors that influence performance and business growth, including access to capital, technical training, and strategic business counseling . By course completion, students will have developed the confidence and competence to independently manage print operations, implement quality and cost controls, lead production teams, and build successful printing businesses that meet the highest standards of efficiency, quality, and client satisfaction.
