The Modern Town Boards and Urban Driving course provides comprehensive training in navigating the model town board—a critical component of Kenya's NTSA driving examination—and developing the defensive driving skills necessary for safe operation in complex urban environments. The model town board is a scaled-down, tabletop representation of a road network used in driving schools to teach road rules and traffic flow before learners progress to practical on-road driving . This hands-on program prepares students for the NTSA manoeuvre yard test, which must be passed before proceeding to the road test , while equipping them with advanced urban driving techniques for Kenya's demanding city conditions. Students receive thorough instruction in the components and operation of the model town board. The curriculum covers identification and explanation of all parts of the model town, including directional arrows, road signs, and road markings . Key features include one-way and two-way carriageways, roundabouts, traffic islands, pedestrian crossings, yellow kerbs, and dedicated parking zones . Students learn to move model cars from one point to another correctly, applying the fundamental rules of the board. The three main NTSA navigation rules are emphasized: using the shortest and most correct route without using the parking area; using the longest and most correct route without using parking; and using the parking area only as a last resort . The course provides extensive training in the two parking styles represented on the model town board. Students master angle/ample/controlled parking, where vehicles are parked diagonally to maximize space efficiency, commonly found in urban areas and parking lots . Training includes adherence to the six rules governing ample parking in Kenya: parking is strictly for small cars only; parking from the farthest end; parking by forward gear; exiting in reverse; not double parking; and when parking next to a double-parked car, skipping the half-parked slot and parking in the next one . Students also learn flush/parallel/uncontrolled parking, where vehicles are parked parallel to the curb without specific angle or regulation, typically seen on residential streets . Urban driving training builds on model town proficiency by addressing the specific challenges of Kenya's city environments. The curriculum covers roundabout navigation rules, including proper yielding to vehicles from the right and correct exit procedures . Students develop lane discipline skills, understanding which lane to use for different turns and when to avoid overtaking at junctions . The program integrates defensive driving principles tailored to Kenyan conditions, addressing congested urban roundabouts, yellow box junctions, blind spot management in high-traffic areas, and road-sharing dynamics involving PSVs, Boda Bodas, and heavy commercial vehicles . Beyond technical manoeuvres, the course emphasizes hazard awareness and risk management essential for urban driving. Students learn to scan the road environment proactively, anticipate threats, and make sound decisions before emergencies unfold rather than during them . The curriculum addresses common accident causes, with emphasis on distracted driving, impaired driving, and driver fatigue—factors that significantly contribute to Kenya's road crash statistics where human error accounts for approximately 83% of lives lost . Students develop skills in speed and distance judgment, stopping distance calculation, and appropriate speed selection for various urban conditions . Safety protocols and professional conduct are integrated throughout the training. Students learn the importance of vehicle inspection procedures, proper use of mirrors and signals, and effective communication with other road users . The curriculum covers the human factors in traffic, including driver perception and awareness, the special needs of vulnerable road users, and the legal and human consequences of impaired driving . Students learn post-collision procedures and insurance obligations, knowledge essential for handling incidents that may occur on busy city roads . The course includes practical training on NTSA test preparation, ensuring students understand the structure and requirements of both the manoeuvre yard test and the road test . Students learn to demonstrate competence in three main testing areas: lane discipline, roundabout rules, and parking skills . The program emphasizes the importance of adhering to traffic rules and highway code, with comprehensive coverage of road signs, markings, and behavioural rules in traffic . Upon completion of the model town board training, students must demonstrate proficiency before being recommended for the NTSA practical driving test .
